Swing bed care

For more information or to become part of the River Falls Area Hospital Swing Bed Program call,

A referral will be needed from your physician, nurse or therapist.

River Falls Area Hospital’s Swing Bed Program is committed to recovery and care that is designed for patients who no longer require an acute care level of hospitalization, but need extra time to heal or strengthen before returning home. Swing bed is used to help rehabilitate from a surgery, illness or accident by providing patients skilled care.

During your swing bed stay, the hospital staff will regularly review your needs and progress, while working with you to establish goals. An individualized plan of care, including the type and frequency of therapy will be developed. The staff caring for you will evaluate your progress on an ongoing basis as well as during a conference with you and your family. A family care conference may also be considered prior to your return home to help develop a plan so that you can return home safely and transition to a home program.

Swing bed is like a bridge from the hospital before going home. It gives patients time to heal and adjust before returning to everyday life.

Swing bed is appropriate for patients who need any of the following care:

  • To regain strength through therapies after an acute medical or surgical stay
  • Daily skilled care such as therapy, IV antibiotics, etc.
  • Specialized wound care
  • Postsurgical orthopedic rehabilitation
  • Stroke rehabilitation
