If you suffer a serious brain injury your doctor may recommend several rehabilitation services depending on the type and severity of your injury.

Brain injury rehabilitation often starts in the hospital (inpatient rehabilitation) and continues after you are able to return home or live in another care setting (outpatient rehabilitation).

  • Physical therapy uses exercise, heat, electrical stimulation and other methods to help patients with brain injury improve their ability to move, function and heal.

  • Speech therapy can help with communication and thinking problems. For example, while recovering from a brain injury you may have difficulty understanding language (aphasia) or difficulty swallowing (dysphagia).
