The campaign for Phillips Eye Institute

Investing in sight, changing lives - The Campaign for Phillips Eye Institute

The Phillips Eye Institute Foundation is raising $10 million to support three key initiatives that are crucial to the mission of Phillips Eye Institute and that will help improve eye health and eye care in our community.

We invite you to join our lead donors, the Bentson Foundation, the Minnesota Twins/Major League Baseball Legacy Fund and Pohlad Family, and the Otto Bremer Foundation, along with other generous donors in the community, in contributing to this campaign.

$4 million investment in community health and outreach

Serving the community is one of our founding principles. Funds will be used to enhance and expand our award-winning Early Youth Eyecare (E.Y.E.) program and our Kirby Puckett Education Center. This includes expanding the E.Y.E. program to St. Paul Public Schools and launching a mobile eye clinic to better serve people with unmet vision care needs.

"For a sighted child, the ability to see clearly means more than navigating through everyday life. It is vital to receiving an education and to the cognitive development of the brain itself. Every child deserves to be screened for visual acuity."
- Bernadeia Johnson, superintendent, Minneapolis Public Schools

$3 million investment in access and mobility

Lack of transportation is often a barrier to eye care for those who need it most. Funding will help the Phillips Eye Institute Foundation continue to provide transportation to and from the hospital for same day surgery patients.

"The Transportation Service that Phillips Eye Institute Foundation provides is incredible. It is truly the difference, for many of my patients, between having and putting off a surgery that could prevent them from going blind."
- M. Vaughn Emerson, MC, attending physician, Phillips Eye Institute

$3 million investment in technology, research and education

Investing in technology is critical to maintaining Phillips Eye Institute’s role a leader in eye care. A portion of funds raised will be designated to the Dr. Irving and Janet Shapiro Innovative Technology Endowment Fund, allowing for future technology purchases. Funds will also be used for current technology needs and to support medical education and clinical research.

"Access to advanced technology at Phillips Eye Institute combined with unique collaboration between ophthalmologists of multiple specialties, under one roof, is critical to the surgical management of complex eye problems."
- David R. Hardten, MD, attending physician, Phillips Eye Institute
