New Ulm Medical Center

Cancer Center fundraising at 90 percent of goal

With the new Cancer Center set to open in November, there are still opportunities to support the center financially with a donation.

Carisa Buegler, the Foundation Director at the New Ulm Medical Center, can’t say enough good things about the fundraising effort for the new Cancer Center. “Over the course of the year, it really became a community-wide effort,” she said. “More than 1,300 people, businesses or organizations in the community have donated so far, and we are so thankful for that.”

Through mid-October 2011, 90 percent, or $450,000 of the $500,000 goal, had been raised for the new Cancer Center. This strong community effort helped ensure that the new center could open this year as planned.

Still Opportunities to Give

Though the support has been strong, Buegler said that people who wish to support the new Cancer Center still have an opportunity to donate. In particular, a phase of the project that will not be complete until next year is one that the patients and staff are very excited about — a beautiful “Garden of Hope” for patients to enjoy outdoors. When the weather is nice, patients can even receive some of their cancer treatments in the garden.

“This beautiful garden will be named in honor of Barbara Fenske, the chairperson of the cancer center campaign, who passed away in July,” said Buegler. “She always got very excited when discussing the ‘Garden of Hope’ part of the project, and in honor of all of her tireless efforts and leadership towards this campaign, it’s a great way to honor and thank her for everything she did and those lives she touched.”

Finishing Strong

When asked about the support the community has already given to the beautiful new Cancer Center, Buegler cannot say enough good things. “We are all so thankful for the wonderful support this project has received,” she said. “For many, it has really been a personal journey. Some have given money to pay honor or tribute to a lost loved one. The result is going to be a brand new facililty that will offer the finest in cancer care.”
