Buffalo Hospital Receives Innovator of the Year Award for 2005

BUFFALO, Minn. 01/16/2006--The Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA) recently named Buffalo Hospital Innovator of the Year in Patient Care for implementing one of the most integrated electronic medical record systems in the nation. The MHA Health Care Awards honor the best and brightest in Minnesota health care.

“In 2004 Buffalo Hospital was the first Allina hospital to launch one of the nation’s largest, most integrated electronic medical record systems.  Providing immediate access to clinical information, the new electronic medical record system also includes the financial and billing process and will ultimately be shared by all of Allina’s seventy-six sites, including 11 hospitals and sixty-five clinics,” said Lenore Day, director of Operations and Clinical Support at Buffalo Hospital. “As part of our ongoing mission to improve the quality and safety of patient care, the clinical improvements that resulted from the electronic medical record system include immediate access to patient information, timely communication of test results to multiple providers, remote access by physicians, safety enhancements of automatically cross checking allergies and medications.”

The Innovation of the Year award honors hospitals that implement creative, new methods and models for the delivery of patient care.  Judging was based on originality, scope, demonstrated effectiveness and potential for applicability to other hospitals.  This is the second time Buffalo Hospital has received this award in the small hospital category.  In 2003 Buffalo Hospital was the first small hospital in the nation to offer InstyMeds, an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) dispenser of prescription medications for Emergency and Urgent Care patients. In 2003, MHA also named Buffalo Hospital the Best Minnesota Hospital Workplace in the same category for the second time. This award is designed to honor hospitals that "go the extra mile" in enhancing employee satisfaction.

Buffalo Hospital is a not-for-profit regional medical center committed to providing exceptional care and improving the health of the communities it serves.  Part of Allina Hospitals & Clinics, information about Buffalo Hospital’s services along with the latest health information can be found online at
