Mercy Hospital, part of Allina Health, named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals® and 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals®
COON RAPIDS, Minn. 03/20/2014--Mercy Hospital is proud to announce that a leading healthcare quality consultant has found Mercy to be one the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals for large community hospitals. In addition, Mercy is among the top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals for community hospitals. Mercy is the only Minnesota hospital listed in these categories.
"In our mission to provide exceptional care, we are proud that Mercy has been recognized by an independent and unbiased party as one of the best hospitals nationwide," said Sara Criger, president of Mercy Hospital. "This award affirms that we are achieving the highest standard of care for our communities…for our neighbors, provided by exceptional physicians, nurses and other staff, right here at Mercy Hospital."
This is the third time Mercy has been listed among the Top 100 Hospitals and the eighth time among the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals.
"We are proud to have been chosen as a top 50 Cardiovascular Hospital," said Jeff Chambers, M.D., Cardiovascular medical director of Mercy Hospital. "To be recognized as one of the top programs in the country is truly an incredible accomplishment. This could not have happened without the dedication and collaboration of our talented team of surgeons, cardiologists, nurses, and staff who focus on providing the best possible care for the patients we serve."
The Truven Health 100 Top Hospitals® study identifies hospitals and leadership teams that provide the highest level of value to their communities, based on a national balanced scorecard. The 100 Top Hospitals balanced scorecard measures hospital performance across 10 areas: mortality; inpatient complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; and post-discharge mortality and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, and pneumonia.
The Truven Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals® study evaluates performance in key performance areas: risk-adjusted mortality, risk-adjusted complications, core measures (a group of measures that assess process of care), percentage of coronary bypass patients with internal mammary artery use, 30-day mortality rates, 30-day readmission rates, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and wage- and severity-adjusted average cost.
The study shows that if all hospitals in the U.S. performed at the level of this year's winners:
- Nearly 165,000 additional lives could be saved
- Nearly 90,000 additional patients could be complication-free
- More than $5.4 billion could be saved
- The average patient stay would decrease by half a day
