First baby born on first day at Allina's Buffalo Hospital's new Birth Center

BUFFALO, Minn. 08/09/2010--Anneliese Barnes of Albertville, Minnesota, gave birth to the first baby on opening day at Buffalo Hospital's new Birth Center.

Anneliese and Piere Barnes are shown here with baby Pierre who was the first baby born in Buffalo Hospital's new Birth Center.

Baby boy Pierre Barnes was born August 2 at 4:32 p.m.

Labor and delivery went smoothly for mom and baby who weighed eight pounds and four ounces, said Birth Center Manager Cindy Oquist, RN.

Husband and dad Piere (spelled with one letter r) Barnes pushed a button to play the new lullaby chime system that announced the new arrival throughout the hospital.

While Pierre is the new Birth Center's first birth, he is the Barnes' third and the couple's first boy. Daughters Dailynn, age four, and Justine, who is one, were also born at Buffalo Hospital in the old Birth Center.

"This is more relaxing. I really like it. It feels more like a suite than a hospital," Barnes said.

The physician attending the first birth was Jennifer Emery, MD, Barnes' obstetrician/gynecologist and chairperson of the hospital's Maternal/Fetal Medicine Department. Emery spoke last Friday at the Birth Center's dedication.
