Unity Hospital receives Level III trauma designation
FRIDLEY, Minn. 04/16/2008--Allina's Unity Hospital has earned a Level III trauma designation from the Minnesota Statewide Trauma System of the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). Unity is one of only seven hospitals in Minnesota to receive this designation.
"Unity Hospital has a long tradition of providing excellent care to trauma patients," said Jon Gipson, MD, Unity's trauma medical director. "By pursuing the Level III designation, and meeting or exceeding these statewide standards, we are formalizing our commitment to continue to provide high quality trauma care to our community."
According to the Minnesota Department of Health, a trauma system is a predetermined and organized response to managing and improving the care of severely injured people. It also provides a foundation for disaster preparedness and response.
"Unity is proud to be a part of the state trauma system for the better care of patients," said Val Kriegler, program manager, Trauma Services, Mercy and Unity hospitals.
What does Level III designation mean for Unity?
A Level III designation verifies that Unity Hospital has the expertise and resources to provide quality care to trauma patients. At Unity, trauma surgeons are available 24 hours a day to respond to trauma emergencies, and nurse clinicians attend each trauma patient throughout the day for care advancement and coordination. Trauma data is collected and entered into a registry database for quality improvement and injury prevention initiatives.
In addition, nurses provide trauma education throughout the hospital; staff provides injury prevention programs for the community; and hospital departments stand prepared for quality trauma care.
Emergency department expansion and renovation
Unity's emergency department has been undergoing expansion and renovation, which will be completed in June. Larger than the original area by 12 rooms, the new emergency department will have 39 bays, and will include specialty rooms for sexual assault victims, mental health patients, and isolation of infectious diseases.
