The lab's director, Jose B. Crespo, MD, was advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the excellence of the services being provided. Owatonna Hospital Lab is one of more than 7,000 CAP-accredited laboratories worldwide. Being CAP-accredited allows the lab in Owatonna Hospital to become part of the Allina medical labs system.

The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960s, is recognized by the federal government as being equal to or stricter than the government's own inspection program.

"This program really is the gold standard for laboratories," said Sandra Otterbein, laboratory manager for Owatonna Hospital. "Going through the program took at least six months of intense preparation and it had at least 1,500 standards we must comply with."

During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory's records and quality of control of procedures for the past two years. CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications, as well as the laboratory's equipment, facilities, safety program and record, in addition to the overall management of the laboratory. This strict inspection program is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients.
