Virginia Piper Cancer Institute® - Cambridge Medical Center Commission on Cancer accreditation

Cambridge, Minnesota 12/02/2013--

In 2013 the Oncology Committee has worked to meet the Commission on Cancer standards and eligibility requirements. Currently, the Commission on Cancer Survey Application Record is being completed as the goal is to be surveyed in 2014. The Cambridge Medical Center Oncology Committee met six times in 2012. Committee membership is defined by the Commission on Cancer and includes Minnesota Oncologist Dr. Sandra Morar, who is also the Cancer Liaison Physician; Dr. Pat Schuster, General Surgeon; Dr. Dana Nelson, Pathologist, and Dr. Thomas Matson, Radiologist. The committee also includes representation from Nursing, Social Work, Nutrition Services, Pharmacy, Lab, Courage Kenny Rehabilitation, Radiology, Cancer Registry, Community Engagement, Hospice, the Allina Medical Clinic, and Cambridge Medical Center Administration. Some of the projects completed in 2013 by the Oncology Committee are:

  • A quality study and improvement project on the length of time from the cancer diagnosis to the initial Oncologist visit. In 2013 the length of time was 3.8, which was an improvement from 7.2 days in 2012.
  • A quality improvement project focusing on reducing the length of time from the time the lab order is placed to the lab results completed. In 2013 the length of time was 37 minutes, which was an improvement from 58 minutes in 2012.
  • A quality study on the impact of hydration for patients receiving chemotherapy.
  • A chart audit to monitoring compliance with evidence-based guidelines. Oncologist Dr. Morar reviewed the charts of the 19 patients diagnosed at Cambridge Medical Center in 2012 with breast cancer. The patients' first course of treatment was compared to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines and the audit showed that National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines were met.
