Allina Health and Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota (Children's) announced they will grow their birthing center partnership by breaking ground on The Mother Baby Center at Mercy Hospital, part of Allina Health, in Coon Rapids, Minnesota.

Choosing a hospital for the birth of your baby is a big decision and we are delighted that you are considering Mercy as the place to deliver your baby. The Family Birth Center at Mercy Hospital provides comprehensive birth services in a comfortable, personalized and family-centered care environment - right in your neighborhood.

Our commitment to families

At the Family Birth Center at Mercy Hospital, mothers and newborns are cared for by doctors, nurses and other health care professionals that are committed to making your birth experience as safe and joyful as possible.

We have a Family Centered care philosophy that encourages and supports communication between patients, families and our staff and we will work together with you so that we can best meet your individual birth preferences.

What you will find:

  • Dedicated, compassionate team of Doctors, Nurses, and other Health Care providers
  • Private rooms where you will labor, deliver, and recover for the first hours after giving birth. Then you will transfer to a private postpartum room for the rest of your stay.
  • Every room has a fold down couch that can be used for the partner to spend the night and sleep on.
  • Two on-site surgery suites for cesarean deliveries
  • Level II Special Care nursery providing a higher level of care for premature babies and newborns with special care needs
  • 24-hour care of babies and mothers by RN staff. 24/7 access to Obstetricians, Anesthesiologists, Pediatricians, Neonatologists and Neonatal Nurse practitioners
  • Webcam and SKYPE capability for military and other off-site dads to participate in the birth
  • Breastfeeding services to help you get started breastfeeding

Whether this is your first baby or you are welcoming another addition to your family, you will find our classes helpful.

Classes are taught by Allina Health Parent Educators who are committed to prepare you for the birth experience here at Mercy Hospital. Our classes are offered to meet your needs, with weekday classes held in the evening or weekend classes.


All About Babies is for anyone interested in how to care for an infant. Topics include early childhood illnesses, bathing, diapering, holding, calming an infant, how to take a baby's temperature, safety concerns and much more.

Breastfeeding Preparation focuses on the benefits of breastfeeding, care of breast, positioning, "latching on," frequency, length of feedings, pumping, storing milk, returning home from the hospital and weaning. It is encouraged that your labor companion attends with you.

Childbirth and Parenting Prep is for first-time parents. The weekend express class and the weekly series include details on labor, birth, comfort measures, medical procedures, cesarean birth, role of labor companion, adjustment to parenting, newborn characteristics, medications and a tour of the Birth Center. It is recommended you complete your class no later than one month prior to your due date.

Expectant Fathers is designed only for fathers-to-be to attend. It includes topics of concern to new fathers such as fears about labor and birth, bonding with your newborn, common joys and problems during the transition to parenthood.

Infant Massage is for parents and for children from three weeks to four months old. Massage can help relax and soothe both you and your infant and/or child, deepen bonding and strengthen communication.

New Brother New Sister is for children ages two to ten whose parents are expecting a new baby. It includes play activities, an age appropriate birth video and discussion time. Bring a doll or stuffed animal to practice holding and diapering. You may wish to bring a camera. Parents must attend.

Refresher Childbirth and Parenting is for parents who have previously attended a childbirth class. It includes information on labor and birth, breathing and relaxation techniques, the role of the labor companion, medications and sibling relationships. It is recommended you complete your class no later then one month prior to your due date.

Support groups

Breastfeeding: The Baby Café of Unity Hospital is place for pregnant and breastfeeding moms to stop by and gain support from a certified lactation consultant.

Postpartum Depression: This free and ongoing group offers education and support for women who are experiencing or are at risk for postpartum depression. Mothers are invited to bring their babies to meetings. Postpartum Depression Support Group meeting locations: Minneapolis and West St. Paul

The Family Birth Center is located on the 4th floor of Mercy Hospital in the East Tower.

You may enter the building through the East Tower main entrance and proceed directly to Mercy Family Birth Center on the 4th floor.

Between the hours of 9 p.m. and 7a.m. this entrance is closed. Patients must enter through the emergency room entrance and can follow signs directing them to the east tower elevators and to the Family Birth Center.
