Offering more birth options: Nurse-Midwives
Every woman and pregnancy is unique. That is why women are looking for a variety of pregnancy care and childbirth options. Allina Health Fridley Clinic now has certified nurse-midwifes, Kari Michalski, CNM and Katie Ireland, CNM, who provide individualized and holistic care throughout pregnancy and a safe and satisfying birth experience.
A certified nurse-midwife (CNM) is a registered nurse who has a graduate or doctoral degree in midwifery, providing well-woman, preconceptual, prenatal, and postpartum services. They are certified by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.
The experienced midwives at Allina Health Fridley Clinic attend births at Unity Hospital. To provide safe and optimal care, the midwives work closely with Allina Health obstetricians, consulting as needed if complications arise.
The midwifery philosophy of care focuses on pregnancy as a state of wellness and health, addressing the whole woman. Women are counseled on lifestyle measures, such as nutrition and exercise, to promote a healthy pregnancy and birth.
Midwives can also offer alternative methods of addressing pregnancy discomforts, such as nausea, backache, and digestive issues. Finally, they partner with women to explore birthing options specific to their needs.
During labor, midwives provide both physical and emotional support, sometimes offering a back rub, a cold cloth to the brow or encouragement through a difficult contraction. They also facilitate family involvement by guiding partners on how to provide support during labor.
Midwives may be a good option if you want a more personalized care experience, one that honors, for example, specific cultural preferences, or focuses on complementary therapies in addition to conventional medicine.
Care beyond pregnancy and birth
Allina Health Fridley Clinic midwives provide a full range of health care services – from adolescence through menopause – including gynecologic care, birth control, infertility assessment, preconception, pelvic pain, anxiety/depression, and menses related concerns.
