Choosing the right plastic surgeon

There are many important decisions that you will need to make prior to having plastic surgery. The first and foremost is, which surgeon. Though we would be very proud to have you select us, we want you most of all to select a surgeon who is competent and with whom you are comfortable.

This section is provided because we hope you do not become one of the many people in this country that end up having plastic surgery by untrained non-plastic surgeons or worse yet, untrained non-physicians. Though there is no guarantee that you will have the best result possible from your surgery, there is no substitute for being well-prepared and making sure you have the best surgeon possible.

The first item to check is the physician’s training. Ask, "Did you train in an accredited plastic surgery training program." Did you know that there are no restrictions the state or federal government puts on doctors as to which procedures they can perform? Thus, it is important for you to check the training received by your surgeon. Because there are many people that advertise for "plastic surgery,” you want to make sure that they have received the appropriate training. Appropriate training includes; 3 or 4 years of general surgery or in ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) and most importantly, 2 years in a plastic surgery training program. There are many physicians who have only had training in general surgery, or only in ENT but that is not adequate.

The second item is whether or not your surgeon is board certified and by whom. There are so many different "board certifications" that it is difficult to decide which one is important. The only two that are associated with plastic surgeons are the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Osteopathic Association. These are important because they are the only recognized boards that can certify medical specialties. There are many other boards that "certify" physicians, but they often do not have the same tough requirements in testing and training that are necessary to be a good plastic surgeon. In some cases, formal training in plastic surgery is not required.

The final and possibly the most important is the nature of the surgeon. You want a physician who will answer all of your questions, who you are comfortable discussing important issues with, and most importantly, someone who you trust. There is no substitute for a face-to-face meeting with your plastic surgeon.
