Rev. David CarlsonM.Div. - Mercy and Unity Hospitals

David Carlson is an ordained (1966) Lutheran Pastor (M.Div.) in the ELCA. He graduated from Augustana College, Rock Island, IL. (1960), and Lutheran School of Theology also in Rock Island. (1965). He holds a Masters degree in pastoral counseling and psychology (STM.) from Andover-Newton Theological School in Newton Centre, MA. (1966).  Following five years of parish ministry in Milwaukee, he has served 34 years as Chaplain or Director of Pastoral Services in men’s and women’s corrections, state mental health institute, and general hospitals in Wisconsin, Iowa and recently retired from Fairview-University Medical Center, Minneapolis, MN. He became the ACPE Supervisor at Mercy/Unity in August 2009.

 

Rev. Kimberly Goodman, BCC-APC, M.Div. - United Hospital

Kim is an Associate Supervisor and Staff Chaplain at United Hospital in St. Paul. She has her B.A. from Concordia College, Moorhead and M.Div. from Luther Seminary in St. Paul. She did congregational internship in an Anglican church in the suburbs of London, England, and completed CPE residency at Abbott Northwestern. Kim is ordained in the Presbyterian Church, (U.S.A.) and is active in the Presbytery of the Twin Cities Area. For the past eight years she has served as a staff chaplain at United Hospital with a focus on oncology, hospice and mental health. Kim lives in south Minneapolis with her husband and two children where she is active in neighborhood revitalization, house restoration, and community livability.

 

Rev. Dr. Verlyn Hemmen, M.Div., D.Min. - United Hospital

Verlyn is the Chaplain Manager and CPE Supervisor at United Hospital in St. Paul. His undergraduate degree is in psychology from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. He has an M. Div. and a D.Min. from Western Seminary in Holland, Michigan. He took his first unit of Clinical Pastoral Education in Des Moines at Iowa Methodist and did his residency at Pine Rest in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Ordained in the Reformed Church in America since 1979, he has served three parishes over a 20-year time span: Twin Lakes Reformed (Kalamazoo, Michigan); Church of the Saviour (Coopersville, MI); and Peace Reformed (Eagan, Minnesota). He began working at United Hospital in 2000 and offered the first unit of CPE there during the summer of 2000. He is married and has a son and a daughter.

 

Rev. Mark Mallinger, M.Div. - St. Francis Regional Medical Center

Mark is a chaplain and CPE supervisor serving St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Shakopee MN. His undergraduate degree is in religious studies/youth ministry from The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth MN, and he has a Master of Divinity degree from Chicago Theological Seminary. Mark did his CPE residency at The University of Chicago Medical Center and his supervisory training with Advocate Health Care in Chicago. He served at various hospital and hospice venues in Chicago before moving to the Twin Cities. Mark is an ordained minister with the United Church of Christ and began his ministry at St. Francis in the fall of 2010.

 

Rev. Dr. Judith Roska, M.Div., D.Min. - Abbott Northwestern Hospital

Judith is a CPE supervisor and chaplain at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. She grew up near Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and graduated from the University of Colorado.  She received an M.A. in counseling from Gonzaga University, an M.Div. at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities, and a D.Min. from the Claremont School of Theology in Southern California. Her CPE training included a residency at the University of Minnesota Hospital and Clinics and supervisory training in Southern California. She began at Abbott in 2004, after fourteen years of ministry in Southern California where she served as a Congregational parish minister in Pomona, and launched a spiritual care and CPE program at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center as the first Supervisor of Pastoral Care. She is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and is the mother of a son.

Rev. Richard Sellers, M.Div., M.A. - Abbott Northwestern Hospital

Dick is Director of the Allina Metro Hospitals Spiritual Care and Pastoral Education Department and is a CPE supervisor at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. He grew up in Fresno, California, and graduated from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He received an M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary in New York City and an M.A. in Family Social Science from the University of Minnesota. He completed Clinical Pastoral Education residency programs in Los Angeles, Denver, and Lexington, Kentucky before moving to Minneapolis. He is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and has been at Abbott Northwestern Hospital since 1977. He is married and is the father of three sons.

Matthew Verkuilen, B.A. Business Management - Abbott Northwestern Hospital

Matthew is the Program Coordinator for the Allina CPE Center and is based out of Abbott Northwestern Hospital.  In this position, he is responsible for the daily operations of the Allina CPE Center and the general administrative work of the metro spiritual care departments. Born and raised in the Twin Cities, he recently graduated with his degree in Business Management from Bethel University in St. Paul, MN.  He is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, is married and has one daughter.  He has been with the department since 2006.

 

Rev. Kyle Vlach, M.Div. - Abbott Northwestern Hospital

Kyle Vlach, a native Minnesotan, is an ordained minister in the Evangelical Covenant Church. His education includes a B.S. in Psychology and M.Div. with Post-graduate Certificate in Marriage and Family Therapy from Bethel Seminary, and is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. He completed both his CPE Internship and Residency at Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Kyle is an Associate Supervisor with the Allina CPE Center, and serves as staff chaplain to Abbott Northwestern’s Cardiovascular department.  His experience includes 5 years as chaplain and pastoral educator at St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Shakopee, MN.  Kyle lives in St. Paul with his wife and daughter.
