National Provider Identifier (NPI)

Allina will collect your National Provider Identifier (NPI) in order to comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Details regarding the NPI include:

  • The NPI is the only number used to process health insurance claims and other transactions that reimburse health care providers. In other words, all billing offices in the nation only use your NPI when filing and processing.
  • Providers who must have an NPI include medial doctors, doctors of osteopathy, dentists, podiatrists, chiropractors, optometrists, certified nurse midwives, independent nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, physician assistants, physical therapists, occupations therapists, speech language pathologists, audiologists, licensed psychologists, psychotherapists, and substance abuse counselors.
  • Your NPI is assigned to you for life. It replaces the different provider identifiers is used to process claims for different health plans.
  • Since your NPI goes with you wherever you work, you will be responsible for keeping your data accurate. You also must share your NPI with anyone who needs it for claims and other transactions.

You may apply for your NPI from National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES), using your license number.
