StaffShirley's storyWhen Shirley Hagerty got tired of her knee hurting last summer, she knew she’d be in good hands if she decided to have surgery at Buffalo Hospital. What she didn’t realize was how smooth the process would be, and how well-informed she would feel every step of the way.Hagerty experienced a team approach that is designed to be easy and well-coordinated for the patient. The care was provided by the orthopedic surgery team at Allina Medical Clinic – Buffalo, the hospital and her Sister Kenny® Rehabilitation Institute therapy team. Education was key“The education the nurses and therapists provided beforehand was phenomenal,” said Hagerty, who is 78 and lives in St. Michael. “I had one-onone time with a nurse educator and all my orthopedics, rehab and blood draw appointments were made for me. I knew the name of my physical therapist and had a book of exercises for before and after.” In July, Hagerty’s right knee was replaced with an artificial joint by Dana Harms, MD, the lead orthopedic surgeon at Allina Medical Clinic – Buffalo. Hagerty was in the hospital for three days. An avid summer camper, she joked that the “joint camp” she attended there with other surgery patients was helpful but not as much fun as some of her other camping trips. Convenient locationsA few days after going home, Hagerty started twice-weekly rehabilitation sessions at Sister Kenny® Sports & Physical Therapy Center in Albertville. Hagerty rejoined her beloved Rim Riders bike club at the end of September. On her last day of rehab in early October, she shared pumpkin bars with the physical therapy staff to “buy my way out.” “Since then, I ride my stationary bike, use an exercise band and weights at home and go to group exercise classes,” Hagerty said. “My knee feels pretty good.” Kannette's storyKannette K. Sheppeard, born prematurely weighing just over two pounds, required life-saving surgery to repair a hole in her colon when she was just a few days old. The surgery resulted in extensive scar tissue and adhesions that caused additional medical problems. Several years ago, Sheppeard was the victim of a hit-and-run, while she was riding a bicycle. As she was treated for her injuries, she received the diagnosis of fibromyalgia, cervical and lumbar disc degeneration and stenosis, and chronic fatigue syndrome. Subsequently, Sheppeard developed a large uterine tumor, requiring another surgery which brought additional pain and symptoms. Sheppeard's complex medical history and symptoms had prevented her from seeking employment, participating in community activities, and engaging in life activities with family and friends. Eventually, she was referred to Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute-Buffalo to address her pain and improve strength and endurance. According to her physical therapist, Tamra Blahut, MPT, CLT-LANA, Sheppeard has achieved numerous successes and acquired new skills to independently manage her condition since she began therapy. She regularly performs a rigorous home exercise program; she has participated in aquatic therapy; and she now uses a pedometer to monitor her overall activity level. In addition, she has lost more than 50 pounds, lowered her cholesterol and triglycerides, and assumed an overall healthier lifestyle. Sheppeard manages her pain through the use of TENS/sequential stimulator, participation in a pain group and attendance in a class about living with chronic conditions. Through her willingness to partner with and trust in her therapists, she has taken a big step in her journey toward improving her life and independently managing her disabilities. In doing so, she has become an inspiration to all those around her. |
