ImPACT™ Concussion Management Program
Sister Kenny Sports & Physical Therapy Center – Buffalo is proud to partner with Buffalo, Rockford, St. Michael and Maple Lake high schools to bring ImPACT (Immediate Postconcussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) to high school athletes.
What is ImPACT?
ImPACT is a 20-minute test that has become a standard tool used in clinical management of concussions. Memory, impulse control, and reaction time are measured.
ImPACT offers an accurate assessment of brain recovery, enabling a better and safer decision as to when an athlete can return to play. Optimally, after an injury, a post-injury test can be compared to a baseline test taken by the same individual prior to the beginning of the sports season. If there is no baseline, the post-injury results may be compared to national norms.
What is the cost of ImPACT?
Baseline testing is offered at no cost to all Buffalo, Maple Lake, Rockford and St. Michael high school athletes, thanks to Buffalo Hospital Foundation.
For other community members, such as those who received head trauma in automobile or other types of accidents, there is a nominal charge for the test.
What you should know about concussions in sports
A concussion is a blow to the head that affects how the brain works.
Concussions can happen in free play, recreational sports, youth leagues, or in high school and college sports.
An ImPACT baseline test would help your child in the event of a future concussion.
