Patients in our Prostate Cancer Program have access to a highly skilled team of experts who offer diagnosis and treatment of prostate and genitourinary cancers including bladder, kidney, penile, transitional cell, testicular and urethral cancer.

They participate in monthly treatment planning conferences to review recent cases. This helps improve the consistency and quality of care.

Robotic treatments

One of the most common treatments for prostate cancer involves surgical removal of the prostate gland, known as a radical prostatectomy. If a doctor recommends surgery to treat prostate cancer, patients may be candidates for a new, less invasive approach called the robotic prostatectomy using the da VinciĀ® Surgical System.

The da Vinci Surgical System provides surgeons with an alternate to both traditional open surgery and conventional laparoscopy. The da Vinci System enables surgeons to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions and allows a surgeon greater visualization, enhanced dexterity, precision and control.

For patients the benefits may include:

  • shorter hospital stay
  • less pain
  • less risk of infection
  • less blood loss and fewer transfusions
  • less scarring
  • faster recovery
  • quicker return to normal activities.

To find out if you are a candidate for this procedure contact the Virginia Piper Cancer Institute Cancer Clinic at 612-863-0200 for a consult.
