Our ongoing commitment is to make your birth experience as natural, safe and joyful as it can be.

Birth Center services

Women who choose to give birth at The Birth Center can take comfort in knowing that our staff has the skills needed to care for families in all aspects of pregnancy, labor and birth. This includes very high-risk mothers and babies needing specialized services, or mothers with low-risk pregnancies that choose to give birth with few interventions. We tailor your birth plan to your individual plans and wishes.

Our specialized services include:

  • Minnesota Perinatal Physicians which is an Abbott Northwestern program that collaborates with Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota-Minneapolis
  • Special support services for families experiencing a high-risk pregnancy, including support groups, specialized birth classes and educational materials.
  • Intensive care for newborns available at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota-Minneapolis, connected by tunnel to Abbott Northwestern Hospital. Through BabyLink, families may watch their babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on their television.

Coming soon - The Mother Baby Center

Silas Wahl, 2, former Abbott Northwestern Hospital newborn, was a ceremonial shoveler at the groundbreaking.

For decades, critically ill babies born at Abbott Northwestern Hospital have been whisked through an underground tunnel for emergency care at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. It's stressful to separate moms from their babies immediately after birth, but it was necessary to provide the best care possible for both.

Soon, this kind of separation will no longer be necessary. Recognizing the need for a central place where mothers and infants could bond while receiving the highest level of care, Abbott Northwestern and Children's - Minneapolis have partnered to create The Mother Baby Center.
