Bronchitis

Bronchitis is an infection of the mucous lining of the bronchial (breathing) tubes in your child's lungs. It may be caused by a virus, smoke or other environmental pollutants.

A virus must run its course. An antibiotic may help only if the bronchitis is caused by a bacteria.

Symptoms of bronchitis are:

  • cough with thick mucus
  • fever
  • shortness of breath.

How to make your child feel more comfortable

  • Give your child extra liquids. This will help clear his congestion.
  • Try to have your child rest as much as possible.
  • Keep your child away from secondhand smoke.

When to call your health care provider

Call your health care provider for an appointment if your child has problems breathing or swallowing.
