Bronchitis is an infection of the mucous lining of the bronchial (breathing) tubes in your child's lungs. It may be caused by a virus, smoke or other environmental pollutants.
A virus must run its course. An antibiotic may help only if the bronchitis is caused by a bacteria.
Symptoms of bronchitis are:
cough with thick mucus
fever
shortness of breath.
How to make your child feel more comfortable
Give your child extra liquids. This will help clear his congestion.
Try to have your child rest as much as possible.
Keep your child away from secondhand smoke.
When to call your health care provider
Call your health care provider for an appointment if your child has problems breathing or swallowing.
