Heart education and support

Mercy Hospital offers classes to help patients, families, and community members manage their risk for heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Health screening, exercise programs, education sessions are available on a variety of topics.

Classes

Low Sodium Strategies defines levels of salt restriction, explains goals and rationale, discusses label reading and restaurant food.

Healthy Heart Nutrition for persons who are overweight and have high cholesterol. Defines low cholesterol and low saturated fat diet, shopping tips, heart healthy recipes and restaurant food. Taught by a registered dietitian.

Risk Factors concentrates on an individual's risk factors and evaluates his/her progress in changing them.

Benefits of Exercise teaches about the benefits of types and methods of exercise, proper exercising techniques and how to gauge the right intensity of exercise.

Stress Management identifies personal stressors and symptoms of the body's response to stress, and teaches relaxation techniques.

Medications includes review of common heart medications' actions and side effects.

Helping Your Heart Heal identifies ways to help your heart recover and work as efficiently as possible after a cardiac event.

Weight Management provides information on how to be successful with weight loss.

Strength Training helps individuals learn ways to increase muscular endurance for return to work and/or for maximal health benefits.

Quitting tobacco

The tobacco intervention program serves patients at Mercy Hospital and provides outpatient programs.

  • If you are at Mercy Hospital for medical reasons and are a smoker, you are given the opportunity to speak with a tobacco cessation counselor. The counselor will assist you in developing a plan to quit using tobacco products and follow up with you after discharge.
