gastric banding, commonly known as Lap Band® or Realize™ Band surgery, limits
the amount of food a person can eat at one time. An adjustable band is placed
near the top of the stomach, creating a small pouch. Food passes slowly from the
pouch into the stomach, resulting in a feeling of fullness with a smaller
amount of food, for a longer period of time. Because fewer calories are taken
in the body stops storing extra calories and instead begins to use fat reserves
for energy. The result is gradual weight loss.
