Cycling, adaptive - Twin Cities

Handcycling and riding recumbent trikes are a great way for people with disabilities to stay physically active and healthy. Adaptive cycling gives you a low-impact cardiovascular workout. It can also help improve your coordination, balance and strength. Courage Kenny Sports & Rec offers two options for adaptive cycling. We have a small fleet of handcycles and recumbent trikes. If you have your own bike, we encourage you to join us!

A bike fitting is required for all individuals interested in using CK adaptive bikes (trikes and handcycles), prior to using equipment. Fittings will be scheduled by appointment only.

What it is

Weekly Rides: We organize weekly bike rides on various trails throughout the Twin Cities. We ride primarily on asphalt-paved designated bike trails throughout the Twin Cities and suburbs. Ride at your own pace with a volunteer instructor. Some riders may bike up to 20-25 miles per ride by the end of the season.

Equipment Loan: CKRI owns a variety of bikes to meet a variety of physical needs. Priority is given to people who are new to handcycling. If you ask for a summer-long bike loan you must attend at least three rides. Recumbent trikes are only available by for rental for the weekly rides due to popular demand. Bike fittings will be scheduled for all new riders.

Who it is for

Adaptive cycling is a sport for individuals with disabilities.

We have a limited number of youth handcycles available. Most of the bikes are best suited for adults.

What to expect

Our instructors are ready to assist you as you learn to ride in a safe, fun and efficient way.

  1. Register online for a bike fitting
  2. You will be contacted to schedule a bike fitting appointment
  3. At the bike fitting we will determine what bike is the best fit for you and it is available for a summer loan (handcycles only) or which weekly rides.
  4. Sign up for weekly rides or a summer bike loan once you know which bike you’ll be using!

If you have your own bike, just sign up for the weekly rides. You bring yourself and the bike, we bring the volunteers.

Good to know

Due to our limited inventory of trikes, they are only available for the group rides (no summer rentals). During the bike fitting, you will be asked to submit your availability for weekly rides.

Helmets are required.
