Dexlansoprazole (By mouth)

Dexlansoprazole (dex-lan-SOE-pra-zole)

Treats heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), or damaged esophagus.

When This Medicine Should Not Be Used:

This medicine is not right for everyone. Do not use if you had an allergic reaction to dexlansoprazole.

How to Use This Medicine:

Delayed Release Capsule

  • Take this medicine as directed. You may need to take it for several weeks before you feel better.
  • Swallow the capsule whole. Do not chew.
  • If you cannot swallow the capsule, you may use one of the methods listed below.
  • Applesauce method:
    • 1. Open the capsule and pour the medicine into 1 tablespoon of applesauce.
    • 2. Swallow the mixture right away. Do not chew it.
    • 3. Do not save the mixed medicine to use later.
  • Oral syringe method:
    • 1. Pour 20 milliliters (mL) of water into a clean container. Open the capsule and pour the medicine into the water.
    • 2. Use an oral syringe to draw up the water and medicine mixture.
    • 3. Swirl the syringe gently so the medicine stays mixed in the water.
    • 4. Give the mixture directly into the mouth right away. Do not chew. Do not save the mixed medicine to use later.
    • 5. Refill the syringe with 10 mL of water. Swirl gently. Swallow the water. This will make sure you get your whole dose.
    • 6. Repeat step 5 with another 10 mL of water.
  • Feeding tube:
    • 1. Pour 20 milliliters (mL) of water into a clean container. Open the capsule and pour the medicine into the water.
    • 2. Use a catheter-tip syringe to draw up the water and medicine mixture.
    • 3. Swirl the syringe gently so the medicine stays mixed in the water.
    • 4. Inject the medicine into the feeding tube right away. Do not save the mixed medicine to use later.
    • 5. Refill the syringe with the 10 mL of water. Swirl it gently. Inject the water into the tube to rinse any leftover medicine through the tube.
    • 6. Repeat step 5 with another 10 mL of water.
  • This medicine should come with a Medication Guide. Ask your pharmacist for a copy if you do not have one.
  • Missed dose:Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
  • Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.

Drugs and Foods to Avoid:

Ask your doctor or pharmacist before using any other medicine, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products.

  • Do not use this medicine with atazanavir.
  • Dexlansoprazole affects digestion and may keep other drugs from working correctly. Tell your doctor if you are using ampicillin, digoxin, erlotinib, ketoconazole, methotrexate, tacrolimus, an iron supplement, a blood thinner (such as warfarin), or a diuretic (water pill).

Warnings While Using This Medicine:

  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have liver disease or osteoporosis.
  • This medicine may cause the following problems:
    • Severe, ongoing diarrhea (C diff)
    • Broken bones in the hip, wrist, or spine
    • Low magnesium levels in the blood
  • Ask your doctor before you take any medicine to stop severe diarrhea.
  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

Possible Side Effects While Using This Medicine:

Call your doctor right away if you notice any of these side effects:

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing
  • Blistering, peeling, red skin rash
  • Fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeat
  • Seizures, dizziness, muscle cramps, or twitching
  • Severe diarrhea that does not go away, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever
