In May 2014, Carol Huttner, RN, BSN, MA, found a new way to share her passion for supporting nurses at Abbott Northwestern Hospital.
As the former vice president for Patient Care and a current Foundation board member, she established a new giving society called Nursing Champions of Care.
The new program is for current and past Abbott Northwestern nurses to support the Foundation’s Nursing Excellence fund. Dollars to this fund support nursing scholarships, attendance at conferences, and evidence-based practice and research fellowships to advance the nursing practice.
“Changes in health care mean that only the sickest of patients are hospitalized. In caring for patients who are sicker, nurses need to rely on the knowledge they gain through advanced education and other experiences. We need to ensure that our nurses are prepared for the future,” said Huttner.
Donations to the Nursing Excellence fund help ease the financial barriers that nurses can face in pursuing education. That frees them up to focus on exploring their ambitions, fulfilling their greatest potential and transforming the future of patient care.
Huttner contends that advanced training and education for nurses leads to innovation in patient care and is directly related to a hospital achieving Magnet status. “This is what helps Abbott Northwestern maintain its cutting edge,” she said.
